Many people find gentle, even pressure calming. If you're considering a weighted product, here are the main things to think about.
Weight
A common starting point for blankets is around 10% of body weight; lap pads are usually lighter. Talk to an occupational therapist or pediatrician first, especially for children.
Size
A weighted blanket should cover the body, not the whole bed — weight that hangs over the edge pulls the blanket off.
Fabric
Cotton covers are cooler; minky covers feel softer and warmer. Removable, washable covers make life easier.
Safety first
- Never use weighted products for children under 3.
- The person must be able to remove it without help.
- Never cover the face or head, and never use weight as a restraint.
